For more than 30 years, the Hilliard Ensemble has been Britain’s pre-eminent vocal group. With a repertoire ranging from Perotin to Errki-Sven Tüür, from Guillaume de Machaut to German composer Heiner Goebbels, this outstanding group has been the benchmark in their field. On this new recording, they move effortlessly through these wonderful works of sixteenth-century Latin church music from Thomas Tallis, Christopher Tye and John Sheppard.

Recorded in the splendid acoustics of Sankt Gerold, the beauty of this recording is unmistakable. Every track on this CD is beautifully sung and if I had to nominate my favourites I would say the pieces from the Missa Sine Nominee from Cristopher Tye are the standouts. But in a disc of this quality, you can’t really say that one is better than the other.

All in all, one of the outstanding classical releases of the year.
