The mind may have boggled but the ears do not lie – Scarlett Johansson’s collection of Tom Waits songs is quite free of car-crash compulsion and wince-inducing whimsy. The narcoleptic down-toned voice is a small surprise soon forgotten as the CD progresses and it emerges that there’s a connection between the singer and the songs, and that this isn’t simply some smart idea from some savvy publicist. The only way this was ever going to be spectacular was as a disaster. It’s not.
