The Other Side of the Sky

Amie Kaufman,Meagan Spooner

Two worlds, two hearts and a choice that will shape their fate forever.

Prince North’s home is in the sky, in a gleaming city held aloft by intricate unknown technology. But North believes his sky island is sinking. Its engines are failing, and the key to saving his home is to venture to the place the engines were first created.

Nimh is the living goddess of her people on the surface, responsible for providing answers, direction - hope. But in the midst of the surface’s worst crisis yet, a mist that spreads madness and poison, doubts have arisen among the people about Nimh’s divinity. She must find a way to manifest her power - before she is overthrown, and all is lost.

North’s and Nimh’s lives are entwined - though their hearts can never be. Linked by a terrifying prophecy and caught between duty and fate, they must choose to either save their people, or succumb to the bond that is forbidden to them.

‘A vivid and compulsive thriller set in a beautiful, perilous world of myths and treachery. You won’t want to put it down.’ - Laini Taylor

Review

In the first of a new fantasy duology, readers are swept into an exciting world that embraces science and magic, an ancient prophecy, a goddess, and a prince who literally falls from the clouds. Nimh is considered a living goddess in a harsh world ruled by magic and dust storms that can kill or turn people insane. She was chosen at birth, after the last goddess broke her sacred vows. Every goddess has a special gift, but Nimh’s has not yet manifested.

North is a prince in the Cloudlands, which are ruled by science and innovation, and exist solely in the sky. His people abandoned the earth many centuries before and assume it is unliveable. When North is showing off his glider, something goes wrong and he plunges to earth. He is rescued by Nimh, who believes he is a god because of an ancient prophecy she discovered that says a star will fall from the sky.

North struggles to understand the importance of magic, but sees it manifest against enemies of the goddess. A romantic attraction grows between the two, even though, as a goddess, Nimh cannot be touched.

There are many rich secondary characters, including the independent bindle cat, who protects the goddess, and Nimh’s guard, a female warrior whom Nimh has known since childhood. The story is action-packed, with palace intrigues and violent cultists, an unexpected enemy, and utterly surprising plot twists.

This is a thrilling and imaginative story of star-crossed destiny with a breathtaking, contemporary twist. Unforgettable and brilliantly plotted, it will be devoured by readers aged 12+.
