These new translations of Chekhov’s five major plays and three of his one-act farces include variant readings from earlier versions and manuscript versions. Laurence Senelick’s translation closely preserves Chekhov’s singular style. Included is the largest collection of Chekhov’s commentary on his plays ever to appear in an English-language edition along with essays by leading European and Russian scholars. Notably there is also discussion of Chekhov’s plays by some of the great directors of the last century. A chronology and bibliography are also included.
