Marry Me

St Vincent

Totally out-of-the-blue greatness from Tulsa, Oklahoma born multi-instrumentalist Annie Clark - aka St. Vincent. St. Vincent makes cinematic pop epics - a new American music, informed by jazz, gospel, blues, Southern folk music, and classical composition. Annie has spent her time as a player for hire, playing celeste in Sufjan Stevens’ touring band and guitar in Polyphonic Spree (she’s on the new album), and fans of those artists and their sound will not be disappointed by ‘Marry Me’. Sound wise there are horns and strings, digital keyboards, squiggling post-noise-rockoutbreaks, backing harmonies and kiddie choirs, all lilting above the stately grandiosity.

Review

Annie Clark is clearly a very talented woman. Having been the resident guitarist for Sufjan Stevens and the Polyphonic Spree she has now embarked on a solo career under the guise of St Vincent and produced a record of shimmering, thoughtful pop that could well be a contender for debut of the year. Her musicianship is at times quite breathtaking as she turns her hand to everything from dulcimer to vibraphone to create a wholly unique sound. Comparisons to Bjork or Kate Bush do spring to mind but what remains with the listener is the sound of a beautifully original voice whose emergence signals the arrival of a major talent.
