Kuo Cheng, a young apprentice in Chinese medicine, makes a delivery at 221B Baker Street, where Sherlock Holmes lies in an opium-induced coma. There, his path crosses that of Charlotte Gaines, granddaughter of the late, great novelist of social ills, John Harold Gaines. Turned away by Dr. Watson, Charlotte enlists Kuo to help track down the source of a gold locket and menacing poem sent to her anonymously. Cryptic clues lead them through the grand salons and wretched slums of London, plunging them into a world of Victorian hypocrisy and dangerous secrets. Motives are murky and answers elusive, but one thing is abundantly clear-someone wants Charlotte Gaines dead.
