Thurmond is a book restorer living in 1868 England. He is sent on a week-long journey by his employer to personally deliver a restored book at the request of the book's owner. Prior to the journey, Thurmond receives a mysterious letter that seems to be haunted, and he receives messages through it from a spirit that resides within the paper itself. The letter leads Thurmond and a companion on a sometimes-hazardous journey to solve a puzzle presented through the changing messages that appear in the letter as well as in the paper pages of books through coded messages in the form of ciphers.Through his search, Thurmond discovers information about his employer that changes his understanding about the man, and learns from the paper ghost's messages that its intent has been to lead him to a "treasure" that has secretly been reserved for his employer for many years.
