Because of climate change, the developed world has been almost abandoned due to a mini ice age.

Two new powers have arise n: 1) The Sub-Saharan area's climate has become as lush as the former northern, developed hemisphere and the tribes in what had been the poor, underdeveloped countries have come together to form the Land Empire; 2) Rich people with their access to technology escaped and colonized Mars.

The unfortunates caught in the middle who couldn't afford to go to Mars and are not of African descent or Muslim welcomed in Xland, have to live underground in abandoned subway systems or hunker down in the frozen suburbs.

There is conflict over the resources everyone needs.

Molly is caught in the middle but when the moment arises for her to be in a position, however poor, to correct a wrong and to make a difference, she seizes it and social justice triumphs.
