Yatzil is trapped in a peace deal which will increase her queen mother's influence. Before she can urge her father to break the deal he is murdered. Yatzil knows who did it, but is sent away, leaving her brother to their mother's manipulations.

The moon ignites before she can mount a rescue, releasing an ancient enemy. Through a dream, Yatzil learns how to defeat this threat, but her brother comes first. If she cannot save her brother, and create a new moon, the only world she has ever known will burn.
