Every so often, you come across lights that shine so brightly you are struck with awe and amazement at its beauty and brightness. My younger cousin David Lee is one of these lights and his presence has inspired me to write this book. It was the necessity of keeping him lit that motivated my writings. I didn't want to be an author. I simply wanted to keep that brightly burning fire ignited. The world of racism in its many fashions was attempting to smother his flame, and unfortunately he had been taught not to seek assistance when in these spaces. And so I watched as he battled against demons and the darkness that surrounded him alone.
Despite reaching out to him, the only time that I would hear from him was when he was elevated. Unfortunately, this didn't occur often. He reasoned to himself that he could do it alone, and he didn't want to be a burden to others. So, in response to not being able to connect with my cousin and not wanting to be overbearing or intrusive, I encouraged him in smaller ways. I began to send him a daily text with the intention of giving his fire oxygen to breathe. I know that I am not perfect, but the strength of the love I have for my cousin always illuminates the presence of God within me. Therefore, these writings are God sent. They are inspired mostly by my cousin but meant for all those light seekers, struggling through their own darkness. This book and all its writings are meant to inspire its readers to push through whatever adversity standing before them.
