Thomas W. Alford's Shawnee Translation of the Gospels in Normalized Orthography and With Glossary: This book is an edition of Thomas W. Alford's The Four Gospels of Our Lord Jesus Christ in Shawnee Indian Language, published in 1929. Alford's original orthography was idiosyncratic, and some of his conventions obscured the precise phonological representation of words. The book lacked a glossary, and since it did not include Alford's English source (the English Revised Version) in parallel with Shawnee translation, it is difficult for a non-Shawnee speaker to engage on any level with his translation. This edition presents Alford's translation in the standard orthography adopted by the Shawnee Tribe. It includes Alford's English source, in verse-by-verse parallel with the Shawnee. In addition, it includes a glossary of 9,600 Shawnee word-forms grouped under 4,050 lexical headwords. Each headword is annotated for lexical class and meaning; each inflected word-form is annotated for morphological attributes. Shawnee (Saawanwatoweewe) is the heritage language of the Shawnee Tribe, the Absentee-Shawnee Tribe of Indians of Oklahoma, and the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma.
