It's spring, 1943. Sheldon, an awkward introvert, is twelve-and-three-quarters, going to be a teen soon. It's time to decide which path to take. His overbearing father has a plan already laid out for him, but is it the life Shel really wants? After a particularly rough day of being bullied at school, Shel decides he's had enough. But when he runs away, wandering much farther than intended-all the way to the end of the city sidewalk, the very edge of civilization-he discovers a new world altogether magical, a world without sidewalks or signs to guide. Here, all who wander are free to choose their own path, to discover their own calling... or become lost in the wilderness! To enter, all Shel has to do is take one more step-easier said than done, however, as the price of admission into the theater of destiny is never trivial. For Shel, he must leave behind the only world he's ever known and surrender completely to whatever mysteries await beyond where the sidewalk ends! There at the threshold where reality and fantasy blend, he is snatched up by a flying boot-thing bound for Arcania, land of imagination and wonder. Shel finds himself among strange company, facing a difficult decision. Will he return home to the safe, predictable life his father has planned for him? Or will he stay and help his new friends solve the mystery threatening Arcania and all who dwell there, and in doing so, perchance find the courage to follow a new path and discover his destiny?
