Derek leads a solitary life, tending to his self-sustained farm far removed from society. Aware of the danger he poses as a werewolf, he has chosen isolation to prevent any harm his transformations might cause. One night, while repairing fences, Derek sees a truck speeding along his property. Men exit the vehicle and dump something over his boundary. Assuming it is trash, he continues his work until the scent of blood freezes him. Investigating, he finds a young woman barely alive. He takes her to his home and nurses her back to health, keeping his werewolf nature a secret. As the woman, Lily, recovers, she and Derek form a bond. Derek realizes how much he missed human interaction. Lily opens up about her past, revealing that her mother was a prostitute for a crime family. When her mother noticed men paying attention to Lily at a young age, she spoke up and was killed. The family kept Lily to take her mother's place, leaving her no choice in the matter. She tells Derek she was trying to escape when they left her for dead. On a full moon night, Derek keeps his distance, believing he can control himself but wanting to be cautious. Lily sees him in werewolf form eating a rabbit. Their eyes meet, and he is shocked when she shows no fear.
