This book consists of a novella, Joey, and seven short stories: "Mrs. Hussain," "Oindrilla," "The Clock,""Polly," "Cordelia," "Angrez Memsaheb" and "Gopal Chacha.".On the insistence of well-wishers I have included an essay that I wrote as an undergraduate: "Listening to Rain."
These stories and the novella belong to the old-fashioned and easy days of the 1970s and early 1980s and are set in Mirzapur and Allahabad (now Prayagraj). The novella is about Joey, an Indian child who loses her parents in a car accident in Africa and how she ultimately settles down emotionally in India. In the other stories we see how the characters navigate through life's myriad circumstances. Love is the thread that binds most of these stories.
