The book is a translation of the original Maithili novel 'Sooryasta' by Mayanand Mishra. The story relates to pre-Independence days in a rural setting in the heart of Mithila where an indigo-growing English landlord lives. His daughter is very much attracted towards the Indian culture and lifestyle and adopts the same for herself. To serve society she persuades her father to give land and money to open an English teaching school for the local children. She also joins the Khadi and Charkha movement initiated by Gandhiji. She falls in love with a local youth who is a Gandhian worker and also her co-worker in the school but both have decided not to marry. The end is very dramatic.
