The Revolt of the Angels by Anatole France is a philosophical and satirical novel that explores themes of rebellion, knowledge, and the nature of good and evil.
The story follows Arcade, a guardian angel assigned to a young man named Maurice. While on Earth, Arcade becomes disillusioned with God after studying human history, science, and philosophy. He discovers that many angels, like himself, have begun to question divine authority. These fallen but enlightened angels, led by Arcade, begin planning a new revolt against God-not through violence, but through reason and intellectual awakening.
However, as the rebellion grows closer, Arcade ultimately decides that replacing one tyrant with another is meaningless. He renounces the revolt, choosing instead a life of quiet reflection and love.
The novel is a witty, ironic critique of religion, power structures, and blind faith, advocating for intellectual freedom and inner transformation over external revolution.
