A Pair of Blue Eyes by Thomas Hardy is a romantic novel that explores themes of love, social class, and fate. The story follows Elfride Swancourt, a young and charming woman living in a rural parish. She first falls in love with Stephen Smith, a modest and ambitious architect. However, their relationship is challenged when Elfride discovers Stephen's lower social background, which becomes a source of conflict and doubt.
Later, she becomes involved with Henry Knight, an older, intellectual man and a friend of Stephen. Knight is more socially acceptable but emotionally distant and judgmental. Elfride is torn between the two men, and her attempts to navigate love and societal expectations ultimately lead to tragedy.
The novel is known for its vivid descriptions of the Cornish landscape and its exploration of Victorian ideals, especially the limitations placed on women. It was also Hardy's first novel to bear his name and introduces some of the recurring themes found in his later works.
