Laughing Boy by Oliver La Farge is a coming-of-age novel set in 1915 among the Navajo people of the American Southwest. It follows Laughing Boy, a young Navajo man skilled in traditional crafts and proud of his heritage, as he meets and falls in love with Slim Girl, a Navajo woman who has been raised in a white-run boarding school.
Their romance is marked by cultural tension-Slim Girl struggles to reconcile her Western education with her Navajo identity, while Laughing Boy tries to remain true to his traditions. As they attempt to build a life together, their relationship is tested by external pressures and personal conflict.
The novel explores themes of cultural identity, love, and the clash between tradition and modernity. It won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1930.
