Dr. Fairchild encouraged Nathan to send Ernest to study Botany, resulting in the Fairchild's home estate transforming into the Dade County Fairchild Tropical Gardens. Sands is the first black Ph.D. graduate from the Dept. of Educational Research at Florida State University.
