The Chronicles of Abby Fields is a fictionalized account of the life of Abby, a young woman who joined the United States Marine Corps in 1942 shortly after the attack by the Japanese on Pearl Harbor. Abby and her best friend Martha joined the Corps together and served at Paris Island, North Carolina. The scope of the novel is broad and multi-faceted with reference to her early years through her enlistment in the Marines and subsequent service in the U.S. Civil Service Commission in Berlin where she actually observed the Nuremberg Trials in person at the Palace of Justice in Nuremberg. The novel references Abby's struggle with alcoholism and finally her reunification with her estranged daughter Alex. The character of Abby Fields is based on the life of Alice Stough, an Alabama native, 1920-2007.
