When the suits at MGM finally hired The Firesign Theatre to make a movie, the group took on the epic adventure of Homer's Odyssey and starred themselves as gods and mortals - Phil Austin took the lead as Bill Odysseus with Peter Bergman as his hippie sidekick, Crazy George. David Ossman was set for the wrathful Poseidon and Phil Proctor the mercurial Hermes. The screenplay, built on a decade of comedy albums and full of pre-CGI special effects, reached a second draft before ending up on the shelf. But - it's baaaack!
The laughs and weirdness that made The Firesign Theatre famous are re-imagined for the screen in this unique collection, aided by Bruce Snyder's images and Ossman's introductions. Here are two versions of The Odyssey, Firesign's original screenplay for the cult classic Zachariah, and a pair of comedies from the Austin/Ossman collaboration - Look Out For The Lumpies, and Saucer!, a bawdy, over-the-top sci-fi sendup, written for the producers of Airplane!
