The story takes place in the early 1950's. Three boys growing up in a small rural north Texas town and two outside the town all family with rural country life. Two will finish school the next year and the other three the following. What will they do with their lives since they know nothing but the rural area where they live? Is there a life outside this? The main character doesn't plan to venture outside the known but is torn over his love life.
