Brutal Moon is an example of branching literature, and follows the well-established format of the Adventure Gamebooks which became immensely popular in the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s. Playing the game is simple; read the story introduction at Reference 001 and follow the instructions from there. Throughout the story you will be regularly offered choices of what you should do next, with each option instructing you to turn to a specific reference as you make your way along one of the many diverging and converging paths the story can take. Each decision made will have outcomes and consequences which can lead to one of several story endings and either your success or failure.
