This small volume contains the substance of the Sprunt Lectures which it was the author's privilege to deliver at Union Seminary, Richmond, Virginia, early in the month of February, 1940. The lectures were given their present form four months later in very special circumstances, when the author was obliged on medical advice to cancel all public engagements. The pages that follow were the children and friends of solitude by the banks of the Delaware. The weeks of communion with them were weeks of terrible happenings for the World for the Church.
