The National Park System currently consists of 433 areas. Some are quite new, having been recently added to the system. The idea that the system expands may not be surprising given the publicity associated with an addition. What is less well known is that areas have also been removed from the system. In fact, Congress has been selectively shrinking and abolishing National Park areas for more than a century. More specifically, 40 areas have been removed for 40 different reasons. Each former area has an interesting story. This book is an illustrated introduction to all these "Lost" National Park areas.
