In recognition of her "solid" 40-year body of work examining "a day-to-day existence set apart by exceptional variations concerning orientation, language, and class," the French essayist Annie Ernaux has been awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. The Swedish Foundation bestows the prestigious award worth 10 million Swedish kronor (about 807,000). It was "a noteworthy privilege," she remarked. The 82-year-labour old's is "praiseworthy and persevering," according to teacher Cart-Henrik Heldin, chair of the board of trustees.
