Book One of A Danish Saga opens in Denmark at the outbreak of the Second Schleswig War in 1864. Young cavalry officer Christian Hansen, a dragoon loyal to his king and country, rides into battle only to be gravely wounded. Discharged from service, Christian faces an uncertain future - but his recovery and growing faith in Christ lead him to a new path. With determination and prayer, he secures a farm near Esbjerg, where he begins life anew with his beloved wife, Sophia.

Through years of hardship and prosperity, Christian and Sophia build not only a farm but also a family. They welcome five children: four daughters and one son. The daughters are strong and willful, each charting her own course. Two eventually choose to emigrate to America, settling in Brooklyn, New York, where they strive to make a life of independence and freedom.

The youngest, Soren Hansen, grows up under the shadow of his elder sisters, his heart restless for adventure. His boyhood is filled with labor on the farm, quiet study of Scripture, and dreams of a world beyond the Danish coast. Though deeply loved by his parents, Soren feels called to something greater - to seek his own future, even if it means leaving all he knows behind.
