Liberty Loving Lion

John F Suggs, Morgan Zo Callahan

The true story of award winning war journalist Lionel Durand. The son of Haiti's last pre-WWII diplomatic consul to France, a member of the French Resistance in the first two years of the German occupation, twice captured and twice escaped from the Gestapo, before finally fleeing to the USA where he served on the French Desk of Voice of America broadcasting back to occupied France. A personal friend of Pablo Picasso and Jean Cocteau, he would go on to report on many of the world's hot spots as the Paris Bureau Chief for Newsweek. Tragically dying at the age of 40 after being injured by a tear-gas bomb that exploded at his feet while he was in the midst of covering the violence and unrest that erupted in the Casbah during the Algerian War of Independence, he was posthumously awarded the prestigious George Polk Memorial Award for "best reporting, requiring exceptional courage and enterprise abroad" by his peers at the Overseas Press Club of America.
