The book's principal story follows the miraculous life of a subway prophet, Andy, from his virgin birth in a Central Park stable to his climatic confrontation with Satan on Liberty Island.

The story begins with Andi hiding in an abandoned Manhattan subway station with his parents. Andy's mother, Sarah, and surrogate father, Joe, are hiding Andy in the subway to protect him from Satan's murderous minions. The abandoned station is called the "Cave" by its residents. Cave residents prefer the forgotten station's isolation and security to the homeless shelters where crime is rampant and the homeless are sexually assaulted, beaten and robbed.

As Andi matures, he uses his expanding supernatural powers to raise money to feed and house Manhattan's homeless population, while fighting against the injustices inflicted upon the homeless by a demonically possessed city Mayor.
