The book follows Anna through two world wars, an unhappy marriage, international fame as a photographer and writer, her reunion with Jack and its tragic outcome and, finally, the search for her granddaughter in war-ravaged Vienna. Anna's story is narrated by her granddaughter, Laura, from a collection of diaries, letters and newspaper cuttings - thereby building a relationship with her own troubled granddaughter, Sunny.
