Author's note.

When you're drawn to being a writer, when feelings in your heart and scenes in your mind's eye compel you to bring them to life via pen and paper or a computer keyboard ideas for a story can come from anywhere. Events inspiring me to write my book 'Prairie Basin' are well worthy of comment and began when my wife Elly and I were touring the USA and a flight over the Grand Canyon we were looking forward to was cancelled due to low clouds. The next day, with four other Brit's and an added bonus of awesome views of the Hoover Dam, we took a helicopter flight into the merciless heat yet spellbinding terrain of the Canyon for a picnic where all was well until our incredibly young pilot, handing out food parcels and luke warm cans of Coke, casually stated we could walk over to the thunderous nearby Colorado River but advised we 'keep an eye open for Rattlesnakes'. With no sight or sound of danger underfoot there was much collective relief when we took off and left. Returning home, and having made notes on what had been a memorable yet somewhat hairy experience, combining the rugged terrain, the heartless temperature and the universal dread people have of reptiles I wrote a fictional survival/adventure story set-in contemporary Arizona revolving around an estranged father and his teenage son who take a vacation in a Recreational Vehicle to salvage their ailing relationship but in the blink of an eye are plunged into to a terrifying ordeal where survival seems remote. From one of my own experiences of such unexpected yet terrifying change I drew on a classic example that happened when I was an Airborne Soldier billeted in a tented desert camp in the UAE and picked up a football sized rock to bang in a loose tent peg seeing to my horror a Scorpion crawl from beneath it, the unforgettable surge of stark fear I felt before rapidly giving the Scorpion a terminal headache using the same rock is pitilessly conveyed as father and son strive to survive during action scenes lasting for half the content of - 'Prairie Basin'
