Valerie Emma Keary is missing most of her childhood memories. After losing three partners to violent deaths on the Pouls Point police force, she has finally managed to put her life back together as a probationary EMT. But when her check ride turns bloody and the murder victim is her ex-boyfriend's father Stan, it all comes crashing down as the murder scene erupts with magic and an armored, flying, blonde woman flies into the sky with Stan's soul.

As Detective Justin Marks investigates the murder, Emma is plagued by waking dreams, visits from the dead, and rune causing migraines. The magic swirls around Emma, driving her to the edge of sanity, until she realizes it's all real. The world is changing around her, and she needs to find the killer before another ritual killing happens or the police arrest her for the murders.
