Dr. Mark Edwards left his high-flying medical career behind to care for his terminally-ill wife and young daughter, but now enough time has passed that hes beginning to think of rebuilding all that he lost. Living the life of a small-town doctor in Beaumont's Quarry isn't fulfilling the potential of the career he left behind, and he wonders if it's exactly what he wants for his future, and for his daughter.

Emma Anderson has nannied for Mark and Briony for years, even though her own father is pressuring her not to leave her life on hold for a job she only ever viewed as temporary. When Mark gets an invitation to attend a medical conference on the coast, she suggests she and Briony come with him - it will give father and daughter a much-needed vacation and she can look after Briony when he is busy. She acts in the interest of her friend and his daughter, never realising she cares for them both as a lot more than just a job.
