Ingrid Marshall finds her goal of becoming an investigative journalist slipping away. Desperate to uncover material for a newspaper article she hopes will jump-start her career - she receives a tip from a mysterious stranger about a clandestine organization of the 1940's - an organization she researched years before while in graduate school. Following this tip places her in the midst of a crime scene. Days later, hunters in the Everglades discover the gruesome remains of the perpetrator.

When the body of a hired killer is found in an alley near Ingrid's condo, rookie FBI agent, Louisa Ceravalo, begins an investigation into this mysterious death. This leads her to a clandestine organization planning an act of terrorism. Louisa's investigation and Ingrid's quest for a newspaper article cross paths. Both begin to uncover clues that lead them to believe they are both looking into the same clandestine organization.

One of these clues points to the perpetrator found dead in the Everglades, but Louisa needs more evidence to tie him to the clandestine organization planning the act of terrorism. In order to do so, she searches for common elements that might link these two deaths together. She eventually comes to the conclusion that there is only one common link between the two - Ingrid Marshall.
