When Bucky Buck was born, his mama knew he was the most beautiful fawn she had ever seen.

He had extra white all over and it was clear he would be hard to camouflage in the grass.

She looked him over, thinking how she had never seen another deer that looked quite like

him. She started to tell him early on, "Bucky, you are different and beautiful." Then she

would muzzle her face to his, in a sweet deer kiss.

When Mama and Bucky would run the fields with other mother deer and

their fawns, Bucky would stay by Mama's side and watch the other fawns play.

He didn't venture to play with them, because he knew that they would stare at him.

It was safer to stay with Mama and avoid the question, "Why do you look different?"

Bucky's favorite thing to do was stand by the road, grazing on the sweet grass that

grew in ditches, so he could stare into the passing cars. He was more curious about people

than about deer. He loved seeing people slow down as they approached him.

"Bucky, you run into these woods this instant!" Mama would call from her hiding

place, as she caught a glimpse of Bucky standing tall. It always scared her when

cars slowed down and made a loud Beep - Beep - Beep sound.

Bucky asked a lot of questions, "Mama, are people scared of us? They travel in cages and

Live in cages, why don't they run through the fields and trees?"

Mama thought for a moment, "Well, my sweet Bucky, I don't know. You ask great

questions, but I don't always have the answers." Bucky didn't seem to mind, he

liked exploring and finding things. He was always planning an adventure.

Mama tried to keep Bucky moving farther from the road, "Bucky, my dear,

forget about the humans! They can be dangerous and you can't tell which ones are safe

for you. I love you, little one, and I don't want anything to ever happen to you!

Stay close, and stay away from people.'But Bucky didn't understand this and he was

ready to start a new adventure to find a human friend.
