The history of Piney Flats, a small community nestled between the waters of the Holston and Watauga rivers, of Northeast Tennessee, goes all the way back to the 1700s when pioneer Daniel Boone passed through the area. Following America’s independence, Piney Flats served as a temporary capital of the Southwest Territory, which was established before Tennessee gained statehood. William Blount, the territorial governor, spent much of his time at Rocky Mount, an early Piney Flats home. Several other pioneer families, including the Masengills, Shells, DeVaults, and Kings, settled in the area, known as the Forks, and established farms, schools, churches, and businesses, including the iconic Wolfe Brothers manufacturing company. The Story of Becoming Piney Flats tells the community’s journey, from the 18th century to today.
