La inceputul secolului al 20-lea, o serie de evenimente
extraordinare au avut loc pe meleagurile golase ale Palestinei,
unde nimeni nu dorea sa locuiasca in acel moment. Evreii, care
se imprastiasera prin intreaga Europa de Est, prin Rusia si restul
globului, au inceput sa se ingramadeasca pe un pamant plin de
maracini, saracie, foamere, boli si durere.
In ciuda ratei inalte de morbiditate datorata malariei si
foametei, evreii nu si-au pierdut credinta si ambitiile, ci au
inceput sa construiasca kibbutz-uri (un loc de munca in Israel,
de exemplu, o ferma sau o fabrica, unde muncitorii locuiau
impreuna, impartindu-si toate corvezile si veniturile). Dupa
cum a afirmat Theodor Herzl, fondatorul zionismului modern:
"Daca doresti acest lucru cu adevarat, acesta se va intampla",
recladirea Israelului a devenit o realitate.
