Franz Roubaud was a Russian Orientalist painter of French origin born in Odessa, which was then part of the Russian Empire.
Franz Roubaud (1856-1928) is of the same period as the famous Spanish painter Joaquin Sorolla, who was born six years later and which the authors have covered in other titles.
Roubaud first of all paints Caucasian themes - wars, river crossings, markets, landscapes, horsemen and he is excellent, mastering the painting of horses in all settings and from all angles, one or many together.
The Caucasus is a well known flashpoint with proud warriors admired by their women and some of which were later employed by the Imperial Russian Army, see authors? book Russo-Japanese War.
His style has both a German and a Russian flavour. He was strongly influenced the Munich painter Theodor Horschelt (1829 - 1871) whose work he saw in Tbilisi, Georgia in the 1870 during a trip there with his parents Roubaud adopted a lot from Horschelt, including never take sides, even in commissioned work.
