Most readers are more familiar with Sax Rohmer’s Fu Manchu series than with his other works. In Bat Wing, the author manages to depict a Sherlock Homes-style detective story full of mystery, strange voodoo rites and an ending that will surprise even the most experienced readers. The main plot of the book is centered around Paul Harvey, the detective who is helped by the Watsonesque narrator, who try to solve a troubling mystery regarding the strange occurrences that affect Colonel Menendez, a Spaniard that has moved from Cuba to England. The latter asks the two to protect him from what seems to be his past catching up. The story follows the American detective and his comrade as they delve into the mystery surrounding Menendez and the curse that seems to have followed him into England. The Spaniard had apparently managed to anger some voodoo powers back when he was in Cuba, and he now things that the curse keeps following him everywhere he goes. The mystery is deepened by the strange voodoo rites that happen in dark circumstances and the wing of an apparent vampire bat that they seem to find everywhere. As opposed to his usual Fu Manchu style, Sax Rohmer writes a pretty straightforward detective mystery where the main characters meet all the members of the Menendez household, various suspicious neighbors and of course, bat wings. Readers will follow the witty detective couple as they try to unravel dark mysteries written with talent by the master of suspense, Sax Rohmer. The fantastic developments are the result of the obvious talent of the author to spin a yard, and they lead to the sensational ending that will surely surprise anyone. Readers should expect an extremely good read and not just some semi supernatural pulp mystery
