In a context of increasing polarization of public opinion about religious questions, how do issues involving religion appear in France, the United States, Belgium, and Canada? Parliamentary commissions, governmental reports, and laws pertaining to Islam and to so-called sects often lead to the promulgation of regulations that reflect the public’s anxiety that religious diversity per se is threatening.
The purpose of this book is to examine some of the identities, values, images, and myths that are perceived by decision makers and by participants in civil societies when boundaries are drawn between the public and the religious at the place where globalization and universal human rights meet.
