Bouts Studies

Art historians and amateurs alike continue to be captivated by the 15th and early 16th century art of the Southern Netherlands. Their interest focuses not only on the stylistic and iconographic aspects of the paintings but also their technical construction. Recent studies and exhibitions have proved that art from the Southern Netherlands have proved to be very influential on art production. Following a major exhibition in Leuven further studies explored the influences and sometimes controversial aspects of Bouts. This publication is the result of that study. Articles deal with the painter’s life and work; his artistic relations with Northern and Southern Netherlandish paintings. Also much is attention is devoted to the intellectual iconography of Bouts work and his stylistic influences on European paintings This book provides an insight into the present state of Bouts study but more importantly open avenues for further research.
