The United States Constitution was drawn up at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia in 1787, signed on September 17th of that year, and ratified by the required number of states (nine) on June 21, 1788. It took the place of the Articles of Confederation, the original statutes of the United States that had been active since 1781.
