Indagacion del choteo was initially a lecture given by Jorge Manach in 1928. In the revision in 1955 the author afirms that, to a large extent, choteo or humor is a vestige of the past. However, a thorough reading of Indagacion del choteo is enough to constitute that choteo is still a characteristic of the social psychology of Cuba, even in our time. In the words of Manach: If we were to ask the average Cuban, the Cuban of the streets, what he understands humor to be, he will give us a simplistic version, but one that is close enough to being a definition because it logically implicates all that we actually found contained in the most typical manifestations of the phenomenon. The choteo - he will tell us - consists of not taking anything seriously. We could use up/finish off all a little more investigation, and it will become clear to us - with a phrase that did not use to express itself before ladies, which I ask you not to mention once we leave here - it will become clear to us that humor consists of making a joke of everything. Indagacion del choteo does not stay in this mere definition of the term, but goes much farther out and digs much deeper in the collective consciousness of the Cuban nation and its fundamental elements.
