The best books never written.
Gustave Flaubert’s best-known novel and one of the great works of world literature brings us closer to the story of Emma Rouault, a young, orphaned woman of peasant origin who marries the doctor Charles Bovary. Her desire to be the protagonist of a romantic life presided over by love, an ambition that her husband cannot satisfy, will be the downfall of the naive girl, who will try by any means necessary, through adventures and lovers, to escape the tedium, monotony, and exasperation that has taken over her life.
The current edition, a recent translation by Mauro Armino, includes the fragments, discovered among Flaubert’s manuscripts, that the author decided at the last minute not to include in the novel. The volume is completed with an introductory study by Jacques Neefs of Johns Hopkins University and a Flaubertian chronology.
She was trying to find out, in life, what exactly was meant by the words ‘happiness’, ‘passion,’ and ‘intoxication,’ which had seemed so beautiful to her in books.
