Fridtjof Nansen hadde et klart vitenskapelig siktemal med sine ekspedisjoner. Fram-ferden hadde som mal a vise at havstrommene kunne fore et skip tvers over Polhavet, kanskje sa langt nord at selve polpunktet kunne nas. Fram gikk forste del av Nordostpassasjen og fros fast i isen utenfor Sibir. I nesten tre ar lot de seg drive med strommen. De drev imidlertid ost for Nordpolen og videre mot Svalbard. I mars 1895 forlot derfor Nansen, sammen med Hjalmar Johansen, Fram og la ut pa sin beromte sledetur i et forsok pa a na polpunktet.
