Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is a genetic disease associated with chronic hemolytic anemia. The aim of this study was to evaluate the anti-calciformation and anti-hemolytic activity of aqueous extracts of Spirulina platensis (SP). The maximum percentage of falciformation was 91.44%, while the rate of falciformation inhibition after 2 h 30 by spirulina extract ranged from 15.10% to 66.09%. The rate of inhibition was dose-dependent, and the rate of reversibility of falciformation ranged from 37.54% to 82.34% as a function of time. The extract improved the Fe2+/Fe3+ ratio with high values of 69.78% and 69.78%. Inhibition of hemolytic inducers ranged from 24.26% to 96.67%, depending on the concentration and nature of the inducer. SP extract demonstrated antihemolytic properties on various hemolytic inducers, with inhibition rates ranging from 36% to 96%.Aqueous SP extract showed anti-sickle cell properties, reversibility of sickle cells in a dose-dependent manner, and antihemolytic activity.
