Literary Translation

This book is devoted to a topical issue in contemporary literary studies: the problem of literary translation. The author examines the problem of reproducing the ethnocultural specificity of the original in translation. Considering that national specificity permeates the entire structure of a literary work, it is necessary, albeit difficult, to preserve and convey it in translation. The author draws on the analysis of the translation of one of the masterpieces of 20th-century Russian prose, the novel Quiet Flows the Don, which provides rich material for studying a wide variety of issues in literary studies. Translators do not always succeed in fully reproducing the national specificity of the original in another language: individual successes alternate with failures. J. Asadov has conducted a fairly serious study, thoroughly examining extensive scientific and critical material on the subject. The conclusions and findings follow from the general course of reasoning; the author demonstrates observation skills, good linguistic and general literary taste, and broad erudition. The author's desire to defend his point of view on many aspects of the problem under study is also commendable.
