This paper deals with the teaching and application of text procedures for the text type 'person description'. It also analyses the texts written by the pupils on this text type. Based on this, the following research question is developed, which forms the basis of this paper: "How differently do pupils in a Year 2 class at a community primary school structure their text procedures for character descriptions before and after a series of lessons in which the text type and its text procedures were taught? Have the pupils understood the text procedures taught in the lesson series and are they able to formulate and characterise their texts in accordance with the text type using the newly learned text procedures?"
