Stereoscopy is the area of knowledge that deals with vision in three dimensions, but by definition it is limited only to techniques that make it possible to reconstitute a three-dimensional scene seen from two different points of view, which in the case of human beings is the scene reconstituted in the brain from the images obtained by the eyes. Initially, this work consolidates the main concepts and techniques in this broad area in order to propose ways of analysing, comparing and classifying stereoscopic techniques, using theoretical concepts and qualitative and quantitative metrics. Additionally, based on the literature review and experimental results, the research seeks to evaluate advantages and disadvantages among stereoscopic techniques and in the field as a whole, to feed discussions, trends and challenges encountered in the application of stereoscopy to Augmented Reality (AR) systems and in the area of digital games.
