Rice is one the major crops in the agriculture world. India is the world's second largest producer of rice. Productivity of rice in India is less than 50% to that of china. Upland rice is cultivated in rainfed fields that are prepared and seeded when dry. The old rice varieties grown in the Marathwada region were tall in height and resistant to iron chlorosis, but in terms of quality parameters, they didn't meet consumer demand for long, slender grains and basmati type grain qualities like scent, intermediate amylose content, absence of white belt and softness when cooking.
